compresses, ointments, and heat to enhance these techniques. Tui na
is best for chronic pain and musculoskeletal conditions.
4. Cupping/Scraping
Cupping
is a type of Chinese massage, which consists of placing several glass
or plastic “cups” on the body. Practitioners warm the cups using
any flammable substance, then the oxygen from the cup is removed. The
practitioner also removes the substance and places the cup against
the skin. The air in the cup is cooled and creates lower pressure
inside the cup. It creates a vacuum and allowing the cup to stick to
the skin. The fleshy surface like the back and stomach, are the
preferred sites for treatment.
5. Chinese Herbs
Practitioners
often use few substances that come from different leaves, roots,
stems, flowers, and seeds of plants such as cinnamon bark, ginger,
ginseng, licorice, and rhubarb. Ginseng is the most widely used
substance for the broadest set of treatments. If a practitioner
suggests Chinese herbology as a treatment, the herbs are fused into a
formula that is alloted in the form of a traditional tea, capsule,
liquid extract, granule, or powder.
